Choosing Your Teen Bedding Style

Since teenagers spend an exorbitant amount of time in their rooms, teen bedding is especially important. The bedspreads they lay on not only create an atmosphere as the focal point of the bedroom, but they also represent an era of self-discovery and wonderment. During these formative years, teens are looking to define themselves and distinguish themselves from others.

This sentiment spills over into almost every item the teen possesses, such as cell phones, cars, backpacks, clothes and even bedding accessories. If you know your child well, then choosing some cool bedding should be a fun bonding experience. If you've got a lot to learn, then there are some basic guidelines you can follow.

The bed is the largest piece of furniture in a teenager's room and one of the only pieces of furniture he or she possesses, which is why choosing bedding is so crucial. What message would your son or daughter most like to convey? A canopy bed whispers romance and idealism, while a soothing monochromatic color scheme and embroidered designs speaks sophistication.

Or perhaps your teen is looking for a wild style with brilliant colors and funky patterns. Comforter sets are an easy way to update a bedroom and allow teens to reinvent themselves time and time again. While adults will consider things like material or brand name, most teens just want something that evokes their own personal style.

There are many teen bedding styles to choose from, but here are a few of the most popular. Floral patterns can be classic but not old fashioned. Try to look for bolder colors with retro, pop art designs, like Isaac Mizrahi's floral comforter sets.

The Hibiscus Quilt collection at Pottery Barn Teen is another modern take on a timeless style. Geometric patterns, including plaids, stripes and checks work for both boys and girls. The website "Wise 4 Living" has some stunning, colorful geometric block patterned comforters that you may want to check out. Theme bedspreads, such as beach, surf, jungle, camouflage and animal prints are all popular choices and in some cases, still cool to teenagers. Shopping for teen bedding can be a bonding experience and you just may learn a lot more about your son or daughter by shopping together. You may not have realized that zebra stripes and leopard prints were back in style, or that your son thinks graffiti art is the coolest. Maybe your daughter still loves dolphins and purple as much as when she was five, or perhaps she's grown into more mature fashion with Burberry and Chenille. Bedding accessories need not be a headache or a bank buster either.
